Cititour Review:
Lucy's Mexican Barbecue is by far the most attractive restaurant to occupy the large southeastern corner of ABC Carpet & Home, and it will probably be the most successful as well. While it's not on the top of the city's haute Mexican list – I still think that honor belongs to Hell's Kitchen – there are enough winners on chef Andrew DiCataldo's menu to attract serious foodies, along with tired shoppers and young trendsetters. The guacamole is little more than pleasant, but it makes a decent enough accompaniment to the excellent (if overpriced) margaritas and sangrias. The truly outstanding starters are the "antojitos," so-called little bites such as the unusual picaditos – little corn boats topped with yummy duck confit. The must-have entrée is the barbacoa, a big-enough-for-two mound of spice-rubbed lamb wrapped in banana leaves, which is accompanied by an elaborate array of sauces, salsas and garnishes, and fresh tortillas. Far more delicate, but also very tasty, are the seafood enchiladas –a trio of cilantro crepes filled with shrimp, crab and lobster. Two side dishes not to be missed are calabaza, roasted butternut squash chunks enlivened by pumpkin seeds and hints of anise, and castanas con championes, a bubbling mixture of chestnuts, mushrooms and olives topped with cheese. Dessert is usually an afterthought at many Mexican restaurants, but you will love Lucy's finales, including cocada, a refreshing coconut flan napped in dulce du mango, and a dense chocolate torte that gets an added zing from a sprinkling of New Mexican chile pepper. And don't overlook the excellent hot chocolate (you need to order a pitcher if you want the whole tableside preparation) and the addictive caffe de ollo, Mexican coffee served black with orange peel and cinnamon. Ole!
