Cititour Review:

There's a nip in the air as Fall begins to set in.  It's the time of year  to seek out comfort foods.  That's what the folks at MacBar are counting on.  The small shop, located adjacent to Delicatessen in Nolita, is serving up several varieties of this comfort food.

The place itself, I guess you can say, is a bit cheesey with its bright orange banquettes and cafe-style tables.  The place is tight with seating for about twenty people at most.  It was drawing a large crowd the day we visited.

On the menu you'll find a dozen varieties of mac-and-cheese; including Four Cheese, Mac Stroganoff, Mac Reuben, Myan Chipotle and Mac Quack with duck confit, fontina, carmelized onion and fresh herbs.   They come in three sizes; small, medium and large ranging from 10 to 17 ounces.  All are served hot from the oven in tins packed neatly in their own little mini-boxes.

We sampled three varieties.  The Classic ($5.99/sm), elbow macaroni smothered in American and chedder.  It had a nice crunchy crust and lots of gooey cheese beneath.  A true winner.  A strong second was the Cheeseburger Mac ($6.99/sm) with lots of ground angus beef in a cheesy sauce.  Our least favorite from our sampling was the Mac Lobsta ($8.99/sm).  It's made with lobster, cognac, tarragon and marscapone.  While there were plenty of fresh chunks of lobster to be found, the flavors just didn't seem to gel.  Stick with the classic.

All-in-all, we loved the concept, and with a bit of tinkering here and there, it will be a strong addition to New York's foodie scene.  It's already becoming a late-night destination when you've got a case of the munchies.  MacBar is open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.  Enjoy!
