Cititour Review:
Since I watch all of Bobby Flay's shows on the Food Network, I decided it was time for a “throwdown” with Flay’s Mesa Grill on Fifth Avenue. Reservations are recommended for a Saturday brunch, but not required. While waiting for my friends to arrive, I decided to try a bloody mary at the bar. Mesa offers great bar service and this spicy drink will definitely open up your sinuses! Once my party arrived, we were promptly seated. Ordering can be tough, especially when you’re salivating as thick burgers and colorful omelets arrive at nearby tables. A basket of jalapeno biscuits, cornbread and coffee cake was quickly devoured as we struggled with our menu choices. I opted for the ranch-style eggs tostada made with egg whites, as requested, while one of my friends went with the chilled caramelized grapefruit and loved it. But I must admit I was jealous of my other friend who ordered the eggs and aged sirloin tostada. It was quite the presentation. The ranch style eggs tostada was excellent, but a bit heavy for breakfast meal. Definitely not the place to go to cure a hangover! It was just spicy enough and the eggs were done perfectly with just the right amount of cheese and sour cream. Bobby Flay also gets kudos for only getting a little bit commercial. Yes, his cookbooks are on display, and for sale near the entrance, but they've resisted the dreaded "vibrating buzzer" to let you know when your table is ready. And for a place with tourist trap potential, they've done a good job at keeping it NYC native friendly. I can't wait to try the rest of Bobby Flay's NYC restaurants!
