In a culinary environment where everything is constantly in flux, where a new restaurant may close within two weeks, the word of the day is unique, and Miss Lily's Favorite Cakes is screaming it from the rooftops. A Jamaican jerk hut with a wet-t-shirt-contest poster hanging proudly at its entrance, Miss Lily's is anything but ordinary... and it's working. The SoHo locale has somehow turned the least sexy food – ribs, jerk chicken, and plantain chips – into the new definition of sex, which may have something to do with co-owner Serge Becker, of Joe's Pub fame. Whatever the secret, Miss Lily's is busy every night with beautiful people – none more beautiful than the leggy staff – digging into saucy, Jamaican fare with their bare hands. With such an ambiance – simultaneously Jamaican jerk hut and hot village nighttime locale – the food doesn't take center stage, though it could: chef Bradford Thomson – married to Jamaican-born Kerry-Ann – has had to tone down some of the essential heat of Jamaican dishes to please American customers. Those who are still looking for heat should be sure to try the Middle Quarters pepper shrimp appetizer (10). Cod fish fritters (9) come with a milder dipping sauce, and the Jamaican classic Jerk Chicken entrée (19) is toned down quite a few Scoville heat units from its traditional recipe, though more jerk sauce is available on the side to spice things up. Curry goat (23), grilled lobster (32) and a vegan bushman plate (19) are just some of the other entrées on offer, while desserts (8 each) include mango mousse, banana cream pudding, and Miss Lily's namesake cakes. Lacking a full liquor license, Miss Lily's makes do with champagne and sake cocktails, as well as a few homemade juices and sodas, with even more available at Melvin's Juice Box, carrying shakes and juice mixes next door. Miss Lily's likens itself to a beach vacation in the city; while it's actually channels the nightclub scene, it's definitely an atypical oasis in the middle of Manhattan.- Emily MonacoAdditional details:
