Cititour Review:

Mottzar Kitchen is joining the crowded landscape for Cantonese food along the Chinatown/Little Italy border.  The spot, which reportedly got some menu-consulting help from Dim Sum guru Joe Ng (Chinatown Brasserie, Red Farm), is offering some signature dishes that are sure to make this place stand out, like the five mushroom spring rolls with white and black truffle, Creekstone beef tartlets, and braised fish belly.

I decided to start with some soup dumplings at a very reasonable price of $3.95 for four.  The tender dumplings are stuffed with crab and pork with a rich broth gushing out with that very first bite.  Fabulous, albeit a little messy.  Next, it was on to some scallops on the half shell ($12.95).  The mollusks arriving with wonderfully seasoned ground pork, and bits of celery for crunch, piled on top.  Dig in deeper and unearth the hidden treasure, a single, perfectly grilled scallop still stuck to its shell and sweet as could be. I could eat this dish every day.  On the opposite side of the spectrum, deep fried pork ribs served with a light orange sauce ($13.95) were my least favorite.

But with more than one hundred items on the menu, there are still plenty of things to try like the house special Peking Duck ($24), steamed egg custard with clams ($12.95), sizzling Virgin Chicken ($13.95/half), ox tail with pumpkin ($18.95) and braised duck with plum sauce ($23.95)  More exotic offerings include goose webs with sea cucumber and shark fin soup.

The space at Mottzar is also quite welcoming with its open air dim sum kitchen, marble tables in an alternating white and charcoal pattern, and comfy banquettes perfect for a Chinese feast.
