Nathan's Famous in Coney Island is the iconic spot for hot dogs in New York City. Nathan's got its start in 1916 as a small hot dog stand on Surf Avenue. It was started by Nathan Handwerker with a $300 loan and his wife's secret recipe, according to the company. Today, the Nathan's name can be found across the globe. But Nathan's in Coney Island still has some unique qualities. Aside from its hot dogs that have a nice snap, and wonderfully greasy crinkle-cut french fries, this location also boasts fresh clams and oysters, along with deep fried frog legs. It's is true gem and worth a visit for a taste of old New York. A second, newer location can also be found on the Coney Island Boardwalk. Nathan's is also known for its annual hot dog eating contest which is held every 4th of July.
