Cititour Review:

I love duck soup! It's one of my favorite soups, but like many people who've experienced it in Chinatown, dealing with the bones can be a daunting experience. So, I was delighted to see a boneless version on the menu at Noodle Bar, a neat little spot opened by Quentin Danté, one of the former owners of Yumcha. The food is prepared Hong Kong style. Noodle dishes dominate along with dumplings and soups. But this is not a place for large groups. The restaurant seats just 20 people at the counter overlooking an open-air kitchen. Chef Ten Vong, formerly of Mercer Kitchen, can be seen working the woks, while chef Maria Rodriguez has a steady hand in turning out some delightful and colorful dishes. I might add she also fields questions from backseat chefs, including yours truly, with a warm and friendly smile. During my first visit, and I plan many more, I tried the Chili Fried Squid ($8). It’s not your run-of-the-mill calamari. The squid is heavily peppered and salted. It’s kicked up with a lime maple glaze and fresh chili which turns up the heat. Eat the chili slices sparingly and at your own risk. They're potent! The Roast Duck ($13) is served in a light broth. It's loaded with slices of crisp duck (skin on), bright green Chinese broccoli, sugar snap peas, whole chestnuts, and shitake mushrooms atop a large helping of noodles. It is simply delicious! Other dishes featured on the menu include; Pan Fried Pork and Chive dumplings ($5), Taiwan Style Clams and Pork Belly ($11) served with shitake mushrooms and snow peas, and Coconut Shrimp & Spicy Rice Noodle ($11). There are also several vegetarian dishes including Vegetable Fried Rice ($6) made with smoked tofu. Desserts are limited to just two, an Almond Toufu, which I’m told is more like an almond custard, and a five-spiced cheesecake. Noodle Bar is flavorful and adventurous. And best of all, you’re part of the adventure!
