International restaurateur Alexander Orlov, founder of Bulldozer Group, has joined with American Standard Hospitality Group decided to create the new restaurant Osteria La Baia (152 West 52nd Street), which is inspired by the glittering coast of Italy and its discreet seaside towns. Here, the award-winning designers of AvroKO have translated the warmth of Tuscany and an airy Mediterranean feel to this cosmopolitan locale, complete with a large marble bar clad in warm blonde wood with handsome blue-leather cushioned chairs, as well as individual tables for cocktailing and snacking.
The dining room is sectioned into two areas with sea blue banquettes, while beautifully appointed tables draped in linen are accompanied by custom-made club chairs. In addition, evocative pictures by famed American photographer Slim Aarons hang on one wall. There is also a private dining room, anchored by a dramatic skylight with retractable glass doors for flexibility, along with a custom-made painting by artist Bradley Wood. The restaurant boasts an open kitchen with a wood-burning oven that turns out some of the restaurant’s signature specialties. Menu highlights include Sicilian Steak Tartare with Artichoke Aioli, Wood Grilled Octopus, Whole Red Snapper Crudo, Pizze with Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Comte Cheese, Red Onion and Spicy Honey, Lemon Ricotta Agnolotti, Lobster Garganelli ‘Calabrese’ with Calabrian Chili, Pan-Seared Skate with ’Nduja Caper Cream Sauce, Rabbit alla Cacciatora, and Dover Sole Saltimbocca (fileted tableside and topped with Prosciutto).
Desserts complete the journey with fluffy Zeppole, a luscious Budino, and Panna Cotta topped with balsamic vinegar. In addition, La Baia has an impressive wine list featuring over 100 bottles from Italy, France and the US, as well as such popular cocktails as Negronis and Spritzes.
