Cititour Review:
New York gourmets have long relied on the Ottomanelli family -- their empire has grown over the past 70 years from a well-respected Greenwich Village butcher shop to a group of stores and restaurants throughout the city. For the past year, Upper East Siders have been relying on Ottomanelli’s New York Grill for delicious lunches and dinners. Part restaurant (there’s now seating for about 20 people) and part take-out/delivery operation, Ottomanelli’s has proved to be an extremely welcome addition to this culinarily deprived neighborhood. As befitting its butcher-shop heritage, the restaurant serves up top-notch burgers, beautifully cooked meat patties served with all the trimmings on a hearty bun. (Those who like to really dress up their burgers have a large variety of toppings to choose from!) That same ground beef also provides the basis for the dense, highly seasoned meatballs that come with nicely cooked spaghetti, a lusty Bolognese sauce enveloping al dente penne, and a fine meat lasagna with plenty of ricotta cheese. These pastas are also among the City’s best bargains – with portions large enough for two costing under $10. I often complement the pastas with a lovely Caesar salad – which also makes a good light meal when topped with grilled chicken. But perhaps the most popular salad is their mouth-filling Pecan Chicken Salad, which boasts organic mixed greens, goat cheese, dried cranberries and its namesake ingredients all accented by a pleasing honey citrus vinaigrette. If you visit, make sure to check out the rotating list of daily special sandwiches, entrees and soups before you order. I’ve become addicted to the crispy chicken tenders that are served on Monday, and Wednesday’s grilled chicken and bacon sandwich is another new favorite. The restaurant has no wine or liquor license, but is happy to let you BYOB. Just don’t make it BYOD (Bring Your Own Desserts), since you’d miss such sweet treats as key lime pie, raspberry cheesecake, chocolate truffle cake and homemade cookies.
