Sometimes it takes the most discreet of places to make a lasting impression. Such is the case with Park Avenue Bistro, the hole-in-the-wall that is anything but a hole-in-the-wall. My mother and I hungrily stumbled upon the French inspired bistro while making our way down Park Avenue. The restaurant is exceptionally narrow with high, white walls. It fits only 25 guests, though each guest we saw was an example of class and style. The restaurant is conveniently located near the Hotel Giraffe.It is very wise to take advantage of the prix fixe menu for lunch or early dinner, especially if Park Avenue Bistro is your date spot of choice. My date, though, was with my mother, so I munched on the French salad classic, Tuna Nicoise ($18), which was delicious, and one of my favorites.
Whether you choose the prix fixe route or eat as you choose, you can enjoy a couple of French staples on the appetizer portion of the menu, such as escargots a “classic” (9) or wild mushroom ravioli with a white truffle sauce ($11).
Main courses include coq au vin, slow cooked marinated chicken with mashed potatoes ($22), crispy duck breast served with a port wine sauce and caramelized potatoes ($27), and a French burger with Gruyere and sauteed mushrooms on a grilled brioche bun ($15). Don’t worry, there’s an American burger, too ($14). The classic croque monsieur ($16) and madame ($17) make their appearances as well, also with authentic taste.
The cheese platter ($16) is a perfect end of the meal with plenty to share. There is a nice wine list available with the assistance of the exceptionally friendly and attentive wait staff. We settled on a bottle of pinot noir ($44), although individual glasses are also available for purchase.
For its lack of square footage, Park Avenue Bistro makes up for it in quality, style, and taste.
