Cititour Review:
Where have I been all these years. I recently stumbled upon Patisserie Claude, a polished French bakery in the Village. First off, the store is spotless and the pastries, perfectly presented, gleaming from behind a glass counter. Also, behind the counter is Claude, with his thick French accent and a friendly bon jour.
We started chatting and he tells that he's been in this country for 30 years and at this same location for more than 24 years. He proudly says he's survived, while the store next door had seen at least ten owners; everything from food shops to sex shops. Claude says he actually preferred the sex shop owners over the rest.
What also makes Claude stand out is his fine hand with pastries. They actually look as good as they taste, something that sometimes gets lost with the new breed of bakeries in the city. A mini coconut cake, for instance, arrives in a flaky shell with a deliciously moist filling and crispy coconut on top. Think macaroon on steroids. Tart apricots are presented atop a creamy layer of almond paste. And the Napoleons arrive with a creamy filling wedged between layers of flaky pastry that maintains a proper crunch. They are in one word - wonderful!
Patisserie Claude is also a great spot to load up on buttery croissants in the morning. I've read that Claude can be grumpy at times. We found him to be the perfect gentleman and the owner of a fine French bakery.
