Cititour Review:
Entering Pequena is like walking into a Mexican fiesta. The outside of the restaurant is lit up with bright yellows, blues and and pinks in a Día de los Muertos motif, or Day of the Dead. Inside is equally as bright with its purple lampshades, Mexican party banners and colorful strings of lights. And everywhere you look there are skulls with large chattering teeth and flowers for eyes.
The food here is just as lively. We stopped in for the lunch special which is quite a steal with most dishes ranging from $7 to $9, and tangy homemade margaritas on the rocks selling for $5 each (Sangria and cerveza is also available). We started with a big basket of crispy tortilla chips and pico de gallo, a fresh Mexican salsa laced with bits of fresh jalapenos. Alongside it was a big bowl of guacamole with large chunks of avocado.
The menu includes a long list of tacos, tortas, enchiladas and tostadas with an assortment of fillings ranging from pork, chicken and mushroom to cheese, fish, shrimp and steak I ordered the enchiladas while my son had the steak tacos. My enchiladas, one cheese, one pork were excellent and accompanied by a huge side of rice and beans. I'm not a big fan of black beans, but these were extremely flavorful. It might have been the smoky taste of bacon coming through that did it. You will also find chile rellenos stuffed with cheese, or a spicy beef hash, and rotisserie chicken marinated in Mexican spices. For dessert, there is chocolate ancho chile cake, flan and some key lime pie.
Cash is king at Pequena, so be sure to load up before you go.
