Cititour Review:

There's no shortage of pho in New York City, though there sadly seems to be a shortage of very good pho that doesn't rely on MSG for that elusive umami taste imparted in broth after roasting your aromatics & bones before simmering them in water for hours. Shortcuts don't work for pho, and taste buds are often left wanting (and itchy) when you visit a place that employs them.

On the contrary, Pho Mekong allows its ingredients to shine through. The standard beef pho here is anything but - heavy on the clove, light on the star anise, the broth takes on a different level of deliciousness as it warms you to your core. Bouncy beef balls, tender slices of beef, and other assorted cow parts make each bowl of beef pho a delight to consume.

And still, there's more: one of the few places in NYC that actually makes a real chicken pho where the broth is made with chicken, not beef (strangely, there are places that will give you beef-broth-pho with chicken slices in it and call it chicken pho), Pho Mekong's chicken pho is quite good. The broth is simpler, clearer, and "cleaner" tasting than the slightly murkier beef broth; the natural sweetness of chicken is the predominant flavor. Topped with a few fried onions and some regular onions as well, the chicken arrives on a plate, on the side: grilled chicken thighs practially fall over the side of the plate, and are absolutely wonderful. Grilled to juicy, tender perfection, the meat satisfies... while the broth cleanses your mouth after each bite, and soothes all your senses. Fighting a cold? This is the answer.

This still isn't all that Pho Mekong has to offer: the menu is quite extensive, spanning a wide range of cuisines and dishes. The appetizers are delicious as well: fried spring rolls, fresh summer rolls, fried everything, though the real star is the beef satay. Redolent with lemongrass, tender, juicy, and cooked properly, this is the perfect start to your meal.

There's also a large array of drinks - condensed milk tea, bubble tea, almond milk tea, and more. Something for everyone!
