Piccante is bringing the flavors of Italy to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The family-run restaurant is small, yet stylish with welcoming service. Each meal begins with homemade bread fresh from the oven with an olive and pepper spread. You might want to start with grilled calamari in pesto sauce. It is a truly amazing dish. There are salads, like the Viola, made with baby arugula, beets, pine nuts and goat cheese. Pasta dishes abound, including homemade fettuccine in a white wine sauce with shrimp, mushrooms and capers, while gnocchi gets some kick from spicy sausage. Spinach ravioli mingle with the flavors of brown butter and sage. Daily specials bring dishes like Ossobuco, a braised veal shank smothered with stewed vegetabes on a bed creamy polenta. Grilled steak is served with a chimicchurri sauce. There's also pan-seared chicken in a mushroom-marsala sauce and fish served two ways. Desserts include olive oil cake with a bright lemon glaze, and "Volcano di Cioccolato." Beer and wine are also available.
