Chef Nicholas Nostadt is bringing his Midwestern homespun classics to the East Village with the arrival of Picnic. The restaurant is industrial chic, boasting 12-foot ceilings, exposed brick and a long zinc bar. The menu is offering riffs on American classics likes scratch-baked beans and boiled peanuts. Mussels take on new life with a hard cider and apricot nectar broth, the pulled pork sandwich gets a root beer twist, while fried chicken is served with a homemade ranch dressing. But the standout dish might just be Picnic's barbecued turkey leg with cranberry, giving a nod to Thanksgiving all year round. For dessert, house-made doughnuts and a rotating selection of pies.
