Sometimes you can tell a lot about a place by the vibe you get when you walk in. Piggyback NYC, from the folks at Pig & Khao, has a lot going for it; a lively atmosphere, friendly staff and terrific food. And this was opening day! There’s a large bar up front along with communal tables for the bar crowd and more table seating in the back. Start with one of several inventive cocktails like the Claude Monet (gin, shochu, butterfly pea, lemon and Prosecco) or The Desperate Housewife (vodka, Aperol, Prosecco, blood orange, lemon and Collins). The menu is a mix of hot and cold bites along with noodle dishes and larger plates. S&P Shrimp, as in salt and pepper, come with a crispy coating dusted with five spice topped with fresh herbs, scallions and chilies. It is served with a tangy kewpie lime mayo dipping sauce. Deep fried chicken is equally as good. It comes with a mound of coconut rice topped with a perfectly runny egg yolk on top. It’s surrounded by roasted peanuts, deep fried anchovies, greens and sambal. Grab a bit of everything to achieve the perfect bite. Also on the menu, Thai Fried Rice, Wonton Mee with char sui pork belly and shrimp & pork wontons, and Hainanese Duck with a crispy duck fat rice cake. >>
