With a visit to Union Square came a stop at Pinche Taqueria a few blocks away on West 14th Street. This is one of three locations making authentic Mexican tacos, sopes and tamales. The restaurant itself has a true taqueria feel with lots of reclaimed wood, industrial-style venting and several tall sharing tables. Simply order at the counter, grab a number, and the food is delivered to your table.
The carne asada taco arrived with lots of charbroiled steak. It's topped with onions, cilantro and housemade guacamole that is a steal at $3.29 apiece. It's also available with spit-grilled pork, charbroiled chicken and chorizo (pork sausage) which my son raved about. Fish and shrimp tacos are also availabe ($4.29 ea). They are served with cabbage and a cilantro dressing. We also shared a chicken tamale which surprisingly was not greasy and lives up to the term "hot tamale." When it comes to heat, Pinche does not hold back. Its salsas, green or red, are prepared daily are packed with habaneros.
Other offerings include a tostada salad, quesadillas and burritos, all made with your choice of meat, fish and vegetarian choices like refried beans or mashed potato. You will also find traditional bebidas, or drinks, in flavors like watermelon, mango and peach. Or just sit back with a nice cold beer and some friends for a Mexican feast.
