Romeo and Milka Regalli, the husband and wife team behind Awash, are bringing the flavors of Ethiopia to Crown Heights with their new community-minded restaurant, Ras Plant Based. Ras, which stands for Prince, is offering playful takes on Ethiopian cuisine. It begins with injera, a traditional flatbread served with vegan spreads like braised collard greens, slow-cooked red lentils with a fiery bebere sauce and savory beet root with diced carrot and sautéed onions. Larger plates include Ras Kifto, a take on a classic kebab, made with impossible meat, bird’s eye chili peppers and Ethiopian cardamom. Brunch brings Awaze Chic’n Waffles served with cauliflower fried “wings.” Several mocktails, made with fresh juices, are offered along with Ethiopian coffee. Brightly colored Ethiopia-inspired graffiti lines the walls with a gazebo-style hut in the back of the space.
