Not since the arrival of Black Seed has a bagel shop generated this much buzz. But when the Torrisi team is involved you know it's going to be something special. Melissa Weller, formerly of Roberta's, is the baker behind the Sadelle's bagels. Flavors include plain, poppy, sesame, onion, pumpernickel raisin and salt & pepper. Smoked salmon and salads, including egg, tuna and whitefish are being sold, along with homemade danishes and buns. Cakes, like a chocolate babka, and cookies, including raspberry walnut rugelach, are also being sold. It's also the only bagel shop where you might need reservations. Better get there early. Spent 1.5 years in Kenya and Tanzania living with locals. Available food was about 85% meat. So much for your food pyramid. Meat was mostly beef and chicken. Came in frozen blocks from Europe and USA.
The "whole grains" she mentions (rice, corn, cornmeal) came in sacks with USA decals on them.
Green vegetables were rare. What vegetables we had were not native to Africa. All veggies regardless of origin were American or European varieties because they were bigger, faster growing, more resistant to disease/drought/flooding.
Kenya grows a lot of fruit....none of it is native. Things like plums (China), pears (Europe), apples (Kazakhstan), grapes (Greece and Italy), oranges (SE China), lemons (NW India), tangerines (SE Asia), bananas (SE Asia), loquat (China), dates (Middle East), pawpaws (USA), pineapple (South America), avocados (North/Central/South America), peaches (China), apricots (Central Asia) and passion fruit (South America).
Not only are their important crops non-native, the variants they grow are 100% US cultivars. The US has done more to create foods for 'natives' than the natives have done for themselves.
Sticking strictly to a 'native diet' the Kenyans and Tanzanians would have died out long ago.
If you can get a hold of the vintage American farming magazines they are very interesting! The Farmers of the U.S. were second to no one! We were happy kids here in the U.S. in the 50-70's.

We certainly don't get all the great veggies and fruit American farmers (the best in the world) produced! The Shat from Latin America stinks except for their Mangos! White American farmers (now deceased) were the BEST! I know I grew up in that era! The great Florida Sunkist oranges were out of this world! I was told these oranges are now shipped to other nations and are expensive. This sucks! No more Gold mine nectarines, some of the greatest nectarines in the world, unless you grow your own.

Why? Cuz US growers get a better price in Britain than in the US. So we ship ours to Britain and import from Mexico.
Why doesn't Mexico simply ship to Britain?
Answer: Britain won't take them because Mexico was never a British colony.
The net result: US citizens eat E. coli-infused Mexican strawberries (and lettuce and tomatoes, etc) while shipping USDA approved strawberries and lettuce and tomatoes, etc abroad.
