Cititour Review:
If you’re one of those indecisive folks who spend hours perusing menus – often to the dismay of your dining companions – have I got a place for you! At the recently opened South Brooklyn Pizza, the menu includes one entrée and one entrée only; and you can guess what it is. What you might not be able to guess is just how good it is.
The achievement is even more remarkable since owner Jim McGown -- who recently refurbished this charmingly cozy, brick-walled spot -- taught himself (with help from experts) how to make this delicacy, and then tinkered with ingredients and combinations to come up with the pizza he wants you to eat. Oh, before I forget, that’s a pizza with no toppings. (McGown is considering serving them on the side. But he’s not planning on delivery. And you can fuggetabout slices!)
The oval delicacy – which barely serves two – that emerges from an imported 1890s Neaopoltian oven has a beautifully crispy, slightly thicker-than-thin crust (which allows it to stay warmer a bit longer than some of the city’s other specimens) topped with a slightly sweet tomato sauce, a touch of basil, and, at the moment at least, four types of cheese: fresh mozzarella, fontina, asiago, and parmiagiana-reggiano. Trust me, it works. Ok, even McGown knows one can’t live on pizza alone; so there’s a full bar, serving everything from specialty cocktails to wine to non-alcoholic beverages; baskets of free homemade breadsticks (made in a day in advance on purpose!); and for dessert, sinfully addictive, homemade Tollhouse-style cookies.
You might even want to start with the cookies and move on to the pizza and then back again. After all, you should have to make at least one decision!
