Surfish is a Peruvian bistro in Park Slope serving tradional ceviches and tapas. While the place is quite small, the flavors are huge. Small plates make it a perfect spot for sharing. A lively sangria doesn't hurt either.
Ceviches run the gamut from ahi tuna with grilled pineapple to tuna belly with an avocado mouse. With the "mixto" ($14) you get a bit of everything; fish, shrimp, octopus and mussels in a spicy rocoto lime sauce. It's served with toasted corn kernels, sweet potato, red onion and cilantro. It is a terrific starter. Chicharron sliders ($12) come three to a plate. The roasted pork is melt-in-your-mouth tender with some crunchy from bits of crackling. It's topped with a lively salsa on a housemade bun. Papa a la Huancaina ($6), potatoes smothered in a creamy cheese sauce, is another winner.
Some people may get turned off from the thought of eating beef heart. But at Surfish, the anticuchos ($11) are a must-have. The meat is marinated in a miso-panca sauce and grilled to perfection. It's so good we doubled up our order. For those opposed to heart, there is also a salmon version.
Our favorite dish of the night was a small crock pot filled with grilled prawns ($14) served in a zuke-yuzo sauce. The shrimps are served head on and bit messy to eat, but dig in. Dipping the prawns in those juices is too good to turn down. Just ask for extra napkins. Our least favorite dish was the grilled skirt steak ($14) which was on the chewy side.
That said, Chef Miguel Aguilar and his team are turning out stunning plates with the freshest ingedients. Surfish is also opening a second location in Gowanus this month. The two story spot on the corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue is sure to give restaurant what it doesn't have right now - much needed space. The Fifth avenue location will remain open focus more on Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken and sandwiches.
