Cititour Review:
Taboonette is a stylish sandwich shop located just a short distance away from Union Square on East 13th Street.
The space is bright and cheery with the feel of a country kitchen. There is limited counter seating up front and two large picnic tables in the center. Wooden ceiling beams give the room some depth while an entire wall is piled high with fire wood. That's because the centerpiece of the restaurant is the taboon, or wood-burning oven. In this case, Taboonette, because it is a smaller version of the original restaurant, Taboon, in Hell's Kitchen.
Food here is equally inviting. We sampled the kebab sandwich. It is made with a mix of lamb shoulder and hanger steak served "patty style" and topped with diced tomatoes, crisp cucumber and green bell pepper. It arrived on a scrumptiously soft pita. This sandwich is definitely worth sinking your teeth into, and at $8.75, still affordable.
The menu features both sandwiches and meals. There is Sirloin with chopped salad, tahini and chimichuri ($9.75/$13.50), chicken shawarma with thyme-roasted Yukon gold potatoes ($8.75/$11.50), and pulled pork with a fennel-jicama-apple slaw ($8.50/$11.25). Vegetarian dishes are also available.
Breakfast is also available all day. There is za'atar, a type of bread flavored with dried thyme, that is served with a Middle Eastern yogurt called labaneh along with a sunnyside up egg. Other breakfast treats include steak and egg, and a French toast pita with bananas and ice cream. You will also find muffins and croissants as well as coffee drinks and artisan teas.
