Cititour Review:

Just about a block or so away from trendy spots like Leadbelly is a not so trendy spot serving up some very tasty dumplings.  It's called Tanxia Wang Fu Zhou and you will find it at the very end of Eldridge Street in Chinatown.

There are no tables.  Just counters with a number by each seat.  As it turns out I was number 28.  I'll have to remember to play it.   The restaurant also doesn't take cash.  But you won't need much.  Because three dollars can get you a full meal.   I think the staff was a bit surprised when I walked in.  The waitresses were giggling a bit as they pointed to a menu on the wall.  As you might have guessed, not one of the workers here spoke a stitch of English.

But that didn't stop me from ordering the dumpling soup, which turned out to be a large plate of plump dumplings stuffed with tender bits of pork and green onion.  They are then topped with your choice of soy or hot sauce provided tableside.  You can eat them as is or dunk 'em  in the clear broth.  The dumplings alone are scrumptious, but the more you dunk the better the broth tastes as the heat from the sauce and juices from the pork filter through.   Fish and pork balls are also served.

Tanxia isn't for everyone.  But if you love dumplings and are on a verty tight budget this spot is a godsend.
