Naming a restaurant The Cannibal is one way to attract intrigued customers... and it seems to be working for this butcher by day, gastropub by night that recently opened near Gramercy. While the name may seem gory, it's actually a nod to Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx, further honored by owners Christian Pappanicholas and Bobby Hellen with cycling gear for sale and a compression pump for use outside. The true draw, however, are the 350 bottled and 10 tap beers and nose-to-tail specialties from the people that brought New York Resto, the pair's Belgian restaurant nearby. The Cannibal serves jointly as more butchering space for Resto and a gastropub in its own right, offering takeout sandwiches like the Pigs Head Cuban (12), grilled Vermont cheddar, gruyère, bacon and pork belly (12) or the Cannibal all-beef hot dog (7) during the day, and small plates of artisanal cheeses and meats to enjoy alongside a brew in the evenings; options include a selection of cured meats (7 each), steak, veal or lamb tartare (14 each) and slow-roasted half pig's head (40). Beers are just as varied and intriguing, with Evil Twin from Denmark on tap (13), and bottles like Fuller's Vintage Ale (28), Alesmith Old Numbskull (30), and Swedish Kalasol (14). While prices have already been picked apart by early reviews, the quality and variety doesn't compare, and in the end, this niche cyclist-cum-charcuterie joint looks like it's here to stay.
