Details:

The old Empire Diner on 10th Avenue in Chelsea is back, reincarnated as The Highliner. The restaurant getting its name from the new stretch of Highline Park just steps away. The retro diner was reportedly built in 1946 by the Fodero Dining Car Company. It was pretty much left for dead in the 1970s before three young New Yorkers saved it and turned it into a landmark. And while the stainless steel Empire State Building statute on the roof is gone, the diner still retains the Empire name. The new owners are serving a full breakfast menu featuring Highliner Omelets, buttermilk pancakes, and biscuits with gravy served with poached eggs, pork sausage and mustard greens. Brunch is served from 11am-5pm. There are burgers, BLTs, and a smoked brisket reuben with sauerkraut and gruyere. Dinner includes everything you'd hope to find in a neighborhood diner; mac & cheese, pork chops and fried chicken. The owners are also working on a late-night menu. There are high hopes for The Highliner which is a perfect spot for people-watching while dining al fresco. - Thomas Rafael
