On a sleepy block known more for its Korean restaurants than happening night spots you'll find The Liberty, a loud, brash and happening bar that is making its presence known in Midtown. We could hear the rumble of crowd as began walking down 35th street from Fifth Avenue. The source: Liberty. It's doors swung open as if to welcome the huddled masses. The centerpiece is a 34 foot long black granite bar shaped in an oval. The crowd here is young, but not too young, with a good mix of well groomed business types: the kind of spot you might expect to find on Wall Street. The Liberty, with a crown etched into its windows, is offering drinks that reflect that New York spirit. There is The Manhattan with Jim Bean Devil's Cut and sweet vermouth served with a maraschino cherry, and The South Bronx Fizz made with pisco, lemon juice and fresh mint. Or, go for a Billyburg; a gin spiked Arnold Palmer topped with Brooklyn Lager. You will also find an assortment of local craft and boutique beers including its own Liberty American Ale at easy-on-the-wallet prices, ranging from $5-$7 per glass; a bottle of wine sells from $32 at the low end to $390 for Don Perignon. The menu runs the gamut from oysters on the half shell ($18 1/2 dozen) and a jumbo shrimp cocktail ($15) to New York hot wings ($11) with an aged goat blue fondue, grilled lamb ribs ($13), and The Liberty Burger ($14) topped with bacon, cheese, dijon, mayo and house pickles. They're also serving up The Ten Dollar Dog, a reuben-style corned beef sandwich with Russian dressing, pickles and sauerkraut. The Liberty is a blast, and judging by the crowds, a sorely needed addition in this part of town. Just be prepared for a real hard-partying crowd. -Thomas Rafael
