Cititour Review:
Food writer Calvin Trillan is famous for his fantasy of hitting one restaurant after another in New York City, picking only the best items on the menu before moving on to the next. In following with his theory, if you order only one thing from Tony's di Napoli, a mecca of Southern Italian cuisine in New York since the late 1950s, make it the chicken scarpariello (21.95). Smothered in succulent, savory sauce with chunks of Italian sausage, this chicken dish is nothing short of incredible.
This family-style Italian restaurant serves huge portions, so bring a crowd, and you won't have to limit yourself to just one thing. Order a dish of zucchini fritti (10.95), thin zucchini chips with lemon juice that are impossible to stop eating. The hot antipasta (19.95) offers a variety of Italian appetizers smothered in rich tomato sauce.
A dish of rigatoni alla vodka (19.95) is definitely an amazing addition, but the rich tomato sauce makes it hard to eat more than a small portion. The same goes for the fettuccine alfredo (21.95), though both are amazing renditions of the Italian-American classic recipes that should not be missed.
The restaurant recently had to close its Upper East Side location because of subway construction, though the midtown branch is still opened. Because of its touristy location and popularity, service often feels rushed or even neglectful, but the food makes up for it, and if you come with a large party, you'll be able to relax and feel at home, even without a doting waiter at your elbow.
