Cititour Review:
Somewhat on the noisy side with many patrons enjoying pre-theater lunches and dinners, Trattoria Trecolori delivers satisfying, if not particularly imaginative, Italian food. The restaurant sits squarely in the middle of the theater district making it easy for folks to eat, drink and make the curtain.
Opening in 1991, though over the years situated at different locations, Trecolori is owned by brothers Marco, Victor and Phil Gonzalez who took over following the death of their father, Joseph. The large space is manned by seasoned waiters who briskly recite daily specials and know how to move the crowd along. A pre-matinee threesome, we were delighted that our waiter plated two orders of seafood salad as one to keep our table less crowded.
The "classic" antipasto teams mushroom repiene, eggplant rollatine, clams oreganata and casino, and sautéed shrimp in a tasty, light tomato-white wine reduction while the Trecolori antipasto brings a very decent assortment of Italian meats and cheeses to pile on the good, crusty bread. Lots of diners opt for pasta choosing from gnocchi in a tomato basil sauce; tortellini alla panna, and fettuccini Alfredo that can be gussied up with Portobello mushrooms, chicken or shrimp, all with small surcharges. There are always daily specials. Veal martini has a Parmesan crust and comes with artichoke hearts while the salmon arrives with capers, sun-dried tomatoes and a substantial side of vegetables. The fish of the day depends on the market and is priced accordingly. There is a twelve-ounce sirloin cooked to order with fried potatoes and lightly sautéed broccoli rabe and plenty of chicken dishes. Desserts are homemade and include Italian favorites such as tiramisu, ricotta cheesecake and a very decent poached pear in red wine with a touch of cinnamon.
The wine list is long with more house wines by the glass than on many menus as well as full bottles broken down into "Italian" and "International" sections.
The second-floor is set aside for private events with a bar and lounge area that houses a large television. It's wheelchair accessible and can comfortably handle up to sixty guests. If you want audio/video capabilities, ask. Private groups can order a la carte or work from either a family-style menu or one set up for buffet service.
Throughout Trecolori there is plenty of "exposed" brick with lighting that doesn't blind and a pleasantly neutral color scheme. Reservations are a good idea especially at theater time and service flows pleasantly--one thing they don't do is rush you along.
This is highly professional old- school Italian that delivers classic treatment with food reliably cooked and served with prices that don't knock you to the floor. Tratorria Trecolori is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to ten-thirty pm; Friday and Saturday from noon to eleven fifteen at night.
