Most of us enjoyed Rice Krispies treats as a kid, but it’s unlikely we ever sampled this childhood snack in such exotic flavors as Caramel Fleur de Sel, Dark Chocolate Chili, or Yuzu Lemon. Well, savvy entrepreneurs Chris and Jennifer Russell and award-winning chef Wendy Israel have put our moms (and dads) to shame at Treat House, the delectable and delectable-looking shop that has already earned flocks of fans in the few days since it opened.
Part of the secret to the store’s instant success is the inventiveness they’ve shown in creating these addictive, miniature goodies, which come in a whopping number of varieties and which feature homemade marshmallows that use raw cane sugar. (The treats, as well as the marshmallows, are kosher, gluten-free, and dairy-free.) There are also nutritious breakfast bars made with nuts, raisins, and chocolate, yummy ice cream bars, and other mouthwatering morsels. And even if you don’t have a sweet tooth yourself, or are just treating your kid to a little reward, there’s delicious, world-famous
Stumptown Coffee on hand to quench your thirst.
But much credit for the shop’s appeal also belongs to talented designers David Wilbourne and Jill Wittnebel of W+CO Design Studio, who have transformed this narrow former card store into a bright, playful emporium. Especially delightful is the whimsical area in the back, complete with a small seating area scattered with tree stumps. "We designed Treat House from both an adults and a child's perspective,” says Wittnebel, the company’s managing director. “The front of the space is clean, organized and all about highlighting the food, while the back is all about fun!”
Best of all, there’s no need to feel guilty for treating yourself to a snack at Treat House. The owners are donating 10 cents of every treat purchased to Food Bank for New York City, a hunger-relief organization that helps provide for 400,000 free meals every day for New Yorkers in need.
