Cititour Review:

After scouring Sunset Park, Brooklyn for the best tamales, testing out street vendors and the numerous Mexican restaurants, we've decided on Tulcingo, which also has an outlet in Elmhurst, Queens (40-11 82nd St). Why? Because the corn meal is perfectly moist, thanks to a layer of wax paper protecting the corn husk while cooking. The tamales are not mushy or water-logged like some we've tried. The filling is also quite flavorful. My personal favorite is the cheese tamale which comes with bits of tomato and a long sliver of chili pepper. It is spicy hot yet flavorful, with the perfect texture. Tamales here are also made with chicken or pork and come flavored with salsa verde (green sauce), a picante red sauce or mole. All are very good! There are also lots of other tantelizing dishes from tacos, with choices like roasted pork, cecina and cactus to overflowing tostadas and hearty soups. Prices are reasonable and everything we've tried has been flavorful and authentic. Tulcingo is half Mexican market and half restaurant. The restaurant is well cared for and the owner is quite friendly. And while it caters to a mostly Mexican clientele, non-Mexicans are made to feel welcome. We think you'll like it. Just don't tell too many people.
