Cititour Review:
Although many restaurants are becoming more conscious of alternative eating habits such as vegetarian, the options are still few and far between for vegans. Enter V-Note. A vegan wine bar and bistro, V-Note caters to those living the vegan lifestyle but claims to provide enough flavor and variety so that even those who eat meat won’t feel like they’re missing out on anything. With a claim so bold, I had to try it out and see for myself. When I entered the restaurant, I noticed the sleek yet comforting décor suggested a sophisticated, lounge-like atmosphere with nothing to give away the fact that it was a vegan establishment. So far, so good; you could bring guests here without mentioning the menu and they would be none the wiser.
After being seated at a cozy table that was so close to the others I could participate in my neighbors’ conversations if I liked, it was time to put this restaurant to the true test and peruse the menu. Were all the dishes going to be foreign-sounding foods I didn’t have the courage to try?
Luckily, the answer is a resounding no. While seitan appears on the appetizer and entrée list and tempeh on the latter, there are plenty of other dishes available for the less adventurous eaters, such as eggplant parmesan ($10) and mushroom risotto. Of course, if you are vegan, you’ll be excited to order the crispy pinenut and basil seitan ($22) or pistachio and pepper dusted tofu ($22). Choosing to stay somewhere in the middle between daring and safe, my friend and I sampled the zucchini rolatini ($9) and roasted pumpkin and sweet potato gnocchi ($12) as appetizers and split the mushroom lentil ravioli ($17). First things first: order the gnocchi. The melt-in-your-mouth texture and unexpected melody the two flavors created together formed a bite so delicious you’d never guess it was vegan. The rolatini was also delightful, and the ravioli was satisfying as well. V-Note also offers an impressive gluten-free menu as well as an extensive organic wine list (starting at $9 a glass).
The verdict? While vegans will be overjoyed to experience a restaurant offering them plenty of choices to suit their diet in an atmosphere that can compete with any regular bistro in the neighborhood, it’s those who have no diet restrictions who will be even more impressed. Now you can dine with your vegan companions without sacrificing one bit of flavor. You’ll have such a good time choosing from the fresh and satisfying menu that you won’t even miss the meat. Trust me.
