Cititour Review:
Italian restaurants in Manhattan are not hard to come by, but for the best of the best, consider Vico Ristorante, a small restaurant on the Upper East Side with a patio on Madison Avenue. The menu prices definitely reflect both the neighborhood and the quality of the food here, but if you decide to overlook them, you will not be disappointed.
The menu changes with the seasons, but regulars know that most dishes are available all year long upon request. Try the chopped house salad for everything a winter salad should be: bitter radicchio, mushrooms, endive and arugula in a perfect balsamic vinaigrette, and be sure to split an order of the fried zucchini with the rest of your party as an appetizer.
As for mains, you have many to choose from, and the choice is not an easy one. Locals swear by the Bolognese, which is one of the best you'll ever try. It's very rich, however (as a good Bolognese should be), so if you're looking for lighter fare, consider the rigatoni siciliana, similar to the down-home Sicilian dish rigatoni alla nonna, with eggplant, mozzarella and tomato sauce. The veal dishes are also excellent, particularly the succulent Milanese Vico: a perfectly cooked breaded veal cutlet worthy of bearing the restaurant's name.
Be sure to pay attention to any specials offered by the kitchen: these are usually seasonal and incredible, and if the squid ink risotto is ever on order, jump on it!
If you make it to dessert, the cheesecake is reknowned, and the tiramisu is excellent. However, if you're willing to content yourself with coffee, the espresso is everything an Italian restaurant's coffee course should be. Have some biscotti on the side for a traditional experience.
