White Gold Butchers is April Bloomfield's tribute to meat. Butcher shop by day and a more formal dining experience by night, the restaurant goes from sandwiches and snacks to full-scale steakhouse. An in-shop butcher shop also allows you to buy prime cuts of beef, sausages and other meats to take home.
We stopped in for lunch where you order at the counter and your meal is delivered to your table. Selections include a popular chopped cheese sandwich with jalapenos and pickles; pastrami with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing; and porchetta with salsa verde and mayonaise. We settled on roast beef served on a perfect poppy seed roll. The beef is tender and juicy with pickled red onions, red wine butter and horseradish cream. It sells for nine bucks and is worth it.
Dinner brings snacks like chicken liver mousse with pickled turnip and okra & corn fritters. There are small plates of cucumber salad with green tomato scabece and pig head with chilis and fried egg. Larger plates range from a half chicken with zucchini and Anaheim pepper sauce to pork with mustard greens and peaches. Beef options include a bone-in dry aged NY strip and ribeye at market prices.
Friendly service and good eats make White Gold Butchers the perfect destination for a meal on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
