The New York Mets were founded in 1962 because of the relocation of the New York Giants to San Francisco and the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles. The Mets kept some of those teams' heritage as they took orange from the Giants and blue from the Dodgers to form their blue and orange color scheme. The Mets played at the Polo Grounds in Harlem as an expansion team before relocating to Shea Stadium in Flushing, New York in 1964. The Mets would remain in Shea Stadium until the 2009 season when the new and improved Citi Field was built in the same Flushing complex.

The Mets have spent most of their history playing second fiddle to their cross town rival the New York Yankees. However, the Mets were able to win 2 World Series in their history in 1969 and 1986 respectively. The Mets are sometimes referred to as the Metropolitans and the Amazin’s. Some of the greatest Mets ever are Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Gary Carter and David Wright.
