Around Town - Astor Place Cube Returns, PDT Pop-Up, Barbie Parties and more

The Astor Place Cube is spinning once again. Also known as the “Alamo Cube,” the 8-foot-by-8-foot sculpture by Bernard “Tony” Rosenthal, has been a fixture in New York City since 1967. New Yorkers and tourists alike are known for giving it a twirl. The cube was removed from its perch last May for some much needed repairs. Click on image to see it spin.

Please Don’t Tell (PDT), the iconic East Village cocktail bar known for its innovative mixology and speakeasy charm, is joining forces with Casa Komos Brands Group to bring the spirit of summer to New Yorkers with the PDT Beach Club summer series. Launching Friday, July 21 outside on St Marks Place, the three-month pop-up features cocktails from award-winning mixologist Jeff Bell highlighting Tequila Komos’ four expressions: Reposado Rosa, Añejo Cristalino, Añejo Reserva and Extra Añejo.

Dim Sum Palace is opening its newest location at 123 William Street in the Financial District. This is the chain’s 8th location. Dim Sum Palace is known for its upscale Hong Kong-style cuisine, live seafood and Chinese Fusion featuring truffle and caviar infused dishes. The Grand Opening is set for August 1st with a traditional Dragon Ceremony.

ChowNow is out with its latest “Secret Menu” items for July at Smorgasburg in New York City. It includes rotating gelato flavors at Common Meadows, a Duck Platter at Duck Season and Lobster Empanadas at Rosie’s Empanada. More info and locations available via the ChowNow app.

Barbie movie mania continues with the film's debut. Barnes and Noble (5th Ave and 46th St) has a section dedicated to Barbie Books, including "the Story of Barbie," and "Barbie Dress Up." Peachy Keen in Hell's Kitchen is hosting a Malibu Barbie Beach Party (July 21); Il Bastardo is hosting a Barbie Brunch Weekend Party (July 22) with "best dressed" contest; and 86 Orchard is hosting a Barbie Dance Party (July 20) described as "the pinkest ever."
The Summer Stroll is on in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood when parts of Third Avenue are closed to traffic for walking and dining al fresco. This year’s dates are July 21 & 28 and August 4 & 11.
