The Upper East Side is experiencing a culinary homecoming, courtesy of Chef Harold Moore, as he reintroduces a reimagined version of his beloved West Village staple, Commerce (2008–2015). The revival, aptly named Cafe Commerce, brings the timeless charm of the original to a new neighborhood while elevating its signature American cuisine.
Located at 964 Lexington Avenue, Cafe Commerce draws from the heart of the original, with saffron-colored walls and coffered ceilings by Paul Dennis (who also led the design of the original) and a stunning 19-foot mural of Saint Sebastian by David Joel suspended above the bar. The bistro-inspired setting captures a warm, inviting vibe, designed as much for relaxed neighborhood dinners as it is for celebratory toasts.
The menu, an evolution of everything fans adored about Commerce, delivers elevated classics alongside inventive new dishes. Diners can expect signature favorites like Harold’s Famous Chicken with foie gras bread stuffing and potato purée (served for two) or the showstopping Steak Diane, paired with haricots verts and classic sauce. Bread lovers will revel in the daily selection of pretzels, Parker House rolls, and baguettes, while newcomers like the sweet potato tortelloni with hazelnuts, pomegranate and beurre noisette.
For dessert, Harold’s Famous Coconut Cake makes its triumphant return, alongside a decadent chocolate birthday cake. The beverage program keeps pace with the menu, offering classic cocktails like the Agave Stinger (Tres Agaves Tequila, Agave, Blood Orange, Lime) and the Gold Rush (Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Pineapple, Honeycomb, Lemon), alongside a thoughtful wine list featuring French and Californian selections.
Cafe Commerce is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., with lunch service on the horizon. As a reimagined homage to its West Village roots, Cafe Commerce is already poised to be an everyday go-to and a must-visit culinary destination for Upper East Side locals and beyond.
