Lula Mae has arrived in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood with elevated Cambodian cuisine in a warm, welcoming space. The restaurant gets its name from partner Mark Roof’s grandmother. In fact there is a subtle “grandma” theme throughout the space, from photos of each of the partners’ grandmothers on the walls to cuisine inspired by Chef Dan San’s grandmother.
Chef San, previously of The Tyger, is offering a refined Cambodian menu highlighting contemporary Khmer cuisine as well as dishes he grew up with. Offerings include Sweet Petite Oysters with Koh Kong sauce and fried shallots; Boch La Hong papaya salad with papaya-shrimp dressing and lemongrass beef jerky; 50-50 Fried Chicken with Sichuan chili vinegar and tempura snow; and Duck Salat with crying tiger sauce and a lime-pepper dressing.
Lula Mae also offers a chic cocktail lounge for private parties that will soon open for dining on weekends, according to partners (and brothers) David and Daniel Balk. Cocktails include Lula No. 3, a mix of Jalapeno Tequila, Ancho Reyes, St. Germaine, lime, basil and a dash of absinthe, and Holiday in Cambodia with Samai Cambodian rum, pineapple, ginger and lemon.
Lulu Mae is located at 472 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (347) 457-5058. For more information, visit lulamaenyc.com
