January 29, 2021, 11:52.27 am ET
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announces plans to allow New York City restaurants to reopen for indoor dining at 25 percent on Valentine's Day. The Governor citing a drop in the state's COVID-19 positivity rate from 7 percent to 4.9%. Cuomo says all of the models project that number to drop,
Cuomo said, "New York City restaurants on our current trajectory can reopen indoor dining at 25 percent on Valentine's Day," adding, "The restaurants want a period of time so they can notify workers, they can get up to speed for indoor dining, order supplies, etc. So we're saying indoor dining at 25 percent on Valentine's Day."
The Governor also saying that going forward they are optimistic about the possibility of opening other venues with testing, citing a successful pilot program with testing at a Buffalo Bills game. Cuomo says testing will be key to the reopening of events.
Cuomo adding that the program will be extended to "safe marriage receptions." All patrons attending events will be tested once approved by local health officials. The new program will go into effect on March 15th. Similar guidance could be adopted for other events with testing and monitoring.
Cuomo said, "Restaurants will open on Valentine's Day. You could make a reservation now and plan dinner on Valentine's Day. You propose on Valentine's Day. And then you could have the wedding ceremony March 15th with up to 150 people."
