From the fleet-footed imaginations of tap dance stars Michelle Dorrance and Josette Wiggan and downtown theater darling Hannah Heller comes Dorrance Dance’s “Nutcracker Suite,” which will play New York City Center, November 22-24.
This jazzy new vision of the traditional holiday favorite is a toe-tapping, hand-clapping revelation set to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s extraordinary arrangement of the Tchaikovsky classic.
The festivities begin with a host of holiday favorites, from “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to “Jingle Bells,” interpreted by vocalist Aaron Marcellus and Dorrance's incomparable dancers, and accompanied by live music. Then through the glittering curtain, audiences are transported to an uptown Christmas party, where the dance begins.
While children will enjoy the show whenever they see it, the family-friendly matinees (2pm on Saturday and Sunday) feature a variety of pre-show activities led by City Center Teaching Artists, including music-making stations inspired by the rhythmic sounds of tap dance, and sensory touch tables and craft activities inspired by the beloved holiday story.
