When the iconic Eisenberg’s Sandwich shop (174 Fifth Ave at 22nd St) in Flatiron closed during the pandemic, a question emerged in the window as to whether it should reopen. Now it has, but under its original name S&P Sandwich Shop, established by Austrian Jewish immigrants Charles Schwadron and Rubin Pulver in 1928, according to the restaurant's website. It was later sold to Russian immigrant Monus Eisenberg and was later renamed Eisenberg’s.
Diners will still find comforting Jewish deli classics like Pastrami or Corned Beef on Rye, or the “Flatiron Delight” with pastrami, corned beef or turkey with slaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian on rye. Other offerings include a Tuna Melt, Reuben, and The Shorewich, roast beef with prairie sauce with horseradish and crispy onions on a roll. There’s also matzo ball soup.
Breakfast also features hearty dishes like Corned Beef Hash and Eggs, PB&J French Toast, and the “LEO,” lox, eggs, and onions served with home fries and toast. Beverages include a traditional Egg Cream (chocolate, vanilla and coffee) along with a Cherry Lime Rickey, milk shakes, ice cream sodas, malted and floats.
Running the sandwich shop now are Eric Finkelstein and Matt Ross, who also own Court Street Grocers in Brooklyn.
