On Monday, May 20, the Chita Rivera Awards, honoring the best in dance on Broadway and in film, was held at the NYU Skirball Center. The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Jared Grimes, was filled with award presentations, heartfelt speeches and tributes honoring the life of Rivera, who passed away earlier this year, and crackling entertainment.

Five competitive awards were handed out: Outstanding Broadway Ensemble in a Broadway Show went to the cast of “Illinoise”; Outstanding Dance in a Broadway Show was awarded to both Antoine Boissereau (“Water for Elephants”) and Tilly Evans-Krueger (“The Outsiders”); and Outstanding Choreography for a Broadway Show was award to Camille A. Brown (“Hell’s Kitchen”) and Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll (“Water for Elephants.”).

The film awards were given to Jennifer White for her choreography on the movie “Barbie.” and the documentary film “Lift,” directed by David Petersen.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Bernadette Peters; choreographer Mayte Natalio (“How to Dance in Ohio” and “Suffs”) received the Douglas and Ethel Watt Critics’ Choice Award; and a special award was given to shoemaker Phil LaDuca.

Entertainment for the evening included performances by Kristin Chenoweth, Lea Salonga, Norm Lewis, Wayne Brady, Stephanie Pope, the Radio City Rockettes, and the ensembles of “The Who’s Tommy” and “The Heart of Rock & Roll.”

Presenters included Bebe Neuwirth, David Hyde-Pierce, Huey Lewis, Brooke Shields, Corbin Bleu, Debbie Allen, Ben Vereen, Shoshanna Bean, Sergio Trujillo, Kenny Ortega, Joe Morton, and Anthony Crivello.

All proceeds of the Chita Rivera Awards benefit the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation Scholarship Program, including the creation of a new Chita Rivera Training Scholarship.
