From Gospel singers, dignitaries, friends, religious leaders and even bankers, Melba Wilson's opening of Harlem favorite Melba's was met with resounding cheers that could be heard throughout Grand Central.

After some prayers, Wilson, who likened herself to a racehorse solely focused on one thing, moving forward, applauded those who showed their support. They included members of her staff, chefs and restaurateurs, and her Harlem neighbors. She seemed most happy when with her son, Sa Cisse, who gave his mom a great big hug.

Wilson got her start at another iconic Harlem restaurant, Sylvia's, and vowed to make it in an industry where woman, especially black women, had a difficult time getting noticed. At the event, Wilson read out loud (and repeated by the audience), "You have within the strength, the power, and the passion to reach for stars and change the world."

Wilson thanked the audience and said, "Let's eat chicken!" Melba's is known for its comfort foods, including Southern Fried Chicken, Country Catfish Strips, Chicken Tenders with hot honey, Charleston Fried Shrimp, Tres Mac & Cheese, Low Country Collard Greens, A$AP Yams and Momma's Potato Salad, among others.

You will find Melba's on the lower concourse of Grand Central between Magnolia Bakery and Shake Shack. For more information, visit melbasrestaurant.com
