Minton's Returns to Harlem
May 17, 2006, 11:44.21 pm ET
Minton's Playhouse is reopening 30 years after the legendary Harlem jazz club closed its doors. In it's heyday, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Dizzy Gillespie all jammed at Minton's, known as the "birthplace of bebop." Owner Earl Spain, who reportedly spent $300,000 to renovate the space, has done a great job restoring the club, which still has its original mural over the stage. The club officially reopens to the public this Friday, but Cititour got a sneak peak. The club, located a few blocks from the Apollo in the Cecil Hotel, will also bring back the jam sessions that made Minton's famous!
