Italian wines and small plates are in focus at One19 Wine Bar + Food on the Lower East Side. Industry veterans Chef/Co-owner Matt Rojas (Rouge et Blanc, Eleven Madison Park) and Sommelier Gianni Cavicchi (Nice Matin), are offering an approachable and affordable destination with a speakeasy feel where visitors are encouraged to explore lesser known grapes. In fact, you won’t find a Chardonnay or Merlot in the bunch.
What you will find are virtually unknown and ancient varieties of wines from Italy, like Albana from Emilia-Romagna, Trebbiano Spoletino from Spoleto in Umbria, Forastera and Biancolella from the island of Ischia, Nerello Mascalese from Sicily, Schiava from Trentino-Alto Adige and more. The “Freshest Flight in the City” features 4 wines on tap including three from the organically farming Emilia-Romagna producer Tre Monti: Frizzante (Pignoletto), Orange (Albana) and Rubicone (Sangiovese), along with Finger Lakes’ Traminette from Rooftop Reds - the only non-Italian producer on the wine list. Guests can scan a QR code on the table for detailed information about each of the wines. A wine-on-tap program, meanwhile, is aimed at making it environmentally-friendly.
Chef Matt Rojas is also serving Italian-inspired small plates with a New York twist. The wine-friendly plates include Pepperoni French Bread Pizza with roasted chilis and fontina; Rosemary Preserved Tuna; Bruschetta with ricotta and truffle honey; Fresh Burrata with smoked cherry tomatoes and pea pesto; Grilled Radicchio with gorgonzola dressing and toasted pumpkin seeds; and a shareable Cheese & Meat Plate.
