Pebble Bar Opens at Rockefeller Center Townhouse

A sleek new bar is hitting Midtown. The Pebble Bar can be found inside the four-story townhouse at Rockefeller Center which once housed a popular watering hole named Hurleys from 1892 to 2000 (currenty Magnolia's Bakery). The new bar will be led by a team of New Yorkers from popular restaurants and drinking establishments such as Grand Army, Celestine and The Jane Hotel Ballroom & Rooftop.

Visitors can expect bar snacks, seafood and timeless cocktails with a nod to New York City. Executive chef Carlos Barrera (formerly of Major Food Group’s The Lobster Club) is leading the kitchen. Offerings include a raw bar with seafood towers, Kampachi Ceviche with leche de tigre, and Whole Maine Lobster with horseradish creme, pear and habanero relish. Bar snacks bring Pretzel Bites with Creole mustard; Popcorn with Za’atar; and Steak Tartare with truffle aioli. Among the larger plates are Crab Cakes with piquillo aioli and frisée salad, Roasted Squash with pepita gremolata, and Mackerel, smoked and torched, with scallion ginger purée and Tuscan kale. For dessert, how about some Cheesecake with brandy caramel.

The Dude (named after a Quincy Jones record) is among Pebble Bar's signature cocktails. It is made with Old Forester 1910 Bourbon, Golden Delicious Apple, Velvet Falernum, ginger, saffron, lemon and dandelion. There's also the Martini 1-H (the nickname for NBC’s “Studio 1-H”) with Monkey Gin or Stoli Elit Vodka, vermouth, bitters, citrus oil and accouterments; and the Carousel (named after the infamous jazz club on 52nd St. between 5th & 6th) with El Silencio Mezcal, pineapple, cinnamon, chipotle, campari and lime; among others.

Pebble Bar’s three floors are designed by John and Christine Gachot, the founders of Gachot Studios. The ground floor entryway, with high-gloss black doors, opens to a warm oak-paneled foyer with a mosaic tile floor. The second floor features glass and brass back-lit bar that overlooks bustling 6th Avenue. In addition to bar seats, standing room is also available at dark stone tables. The third floor houses a 35-seat, dark blue dining room with brass table lamps, and stone and wood tables complemented by curved leather banquette, along with a marble-lined oyster bar. The fourth floor, called Johnny’s, is an event space that can host up to 50 guests with custom-designed sofas and area rugs, vintage chairs, stone coffee tables, and a classic black piano.

Pebble Bar is co-owned and operated by Noah Bernamoff, Julian Brizzi, Matt Kliegman, Carlos Quirarte, and Matthew Charles, who if you don't know their names, you've probably heard of their establishments. Noah Bernamoff and Julian Brizzi are the owners of Grand Army in Boerum Hill, and Celestine in DUMBO.
