Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska officially opened the Alexandra Exter: The Stage Is a World exhibition at the Ukrainian Museum in New York City. This landmark event, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly, was a major cultural moment, showcasing the first comprehensive museum presentation of Exter’s work in North America.

Hosted by the Ukrainian Museum’s Director Peter Doroshenko and Board President Adrian Hewryk, the exhibition highlights 40 significant works by the avant-garde artist, including paintings, costumes, and theatre designs. Exter, often referred to as the “avant-garde Amazon,” was a pioneering force in movements like Cubism and Constructivism, with a strong influence on theatre, cinema, and modern art. The exhibition underscores her contribution to Ukrainian cultural heritage and explores her career spanning Kyiv, Paris, and beyond.

In his opening remarks, President Zelensky emphasized the importance of celebrating Ukrainian cultural icons like Exter during this critical period for Ukraine. Following the opening, the President engaged in a conversation with Ukraine’s Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, highlighting the international collaboration behind the exhibition.

Running from September 27, 2024, to January 19, 2025, Alexandra Exter: The Stage Is a World not only reclaims Exter’s Ukrainian identity but also shines a spotlight on her role in shaping European modernism.

The Ukrainian Museum is located at 222 E 6th Street in Manhattan.
