Yvonne Wells, now 84, began her quilting journey at the age of 40 and has since become a remarkable figure in contemporary art. Her work is currently being featured in New York City at Fort Gansevroot.
The exhibition, Beyond Patchwork: The Abstractions of Yvonne Wells, features fifteen works, including early pieces and recent creations like The Gees Bend Way (2022), which pays homage to her artistic predecessors. Wells' quilts are often marked by irregular shapes and spontaneous designs that reflect her resourcefulness and creativity. As she eloquently states, “If you are looking for stitches that are not seen, you’re in the wrong place. If you’re looking for squares that are squarish, you’re in the wrong place. There isn’t anything that I do that is measured by a tape.”
Wells’ quilts have gained international acclaim, with exhibitions in France, Italy, and Japan, and are included in prestigious permanent collections such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will be on display through November 2, 2024 Fort Gansevoort, 5 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan.
