Cititour Review:
Ciano serves as the reason New York City has one of the best reputations for fine dining. What is more quintessential Manhattan than an intimate, dimly lit Italian restaurant of superb quality? I can’t think of anything beyond Ciano.

When we arrived the place was bustling.  The crackling fireplace bathing diners in a soft glow. We were seated on the second floor level beneath a rustic wooden ceiling. The walls covered with fantastic bottles. I started with a glass of a full-bodied Merlot and immediately felt at home in Ciano.  It was a feeling that only intensified as I warmed up with my Merlot and mellowed out amidst the cozy décor and candlelight.

The meal, prepared by celebrity chef Shea Gallante, was simply amazing. It began with a salad of mixed greens and figs ($15) and although the portion was small, the flavor was hardly lacking. The burrata with broccoli rabe pesto on grilled country bread was so delicious and plentiful for $18. As a mid-course, we enjoyed the rosemary foccacia served alongside roasted veal meatballs and polenta ($18) that our waiter informed us was, “not to be missed!” Right he was, as the meatballs were phenomenal. It is the restaurant's most famous dish.

Meatballs aside, the pastas are the strongest portion of the menu. Saffron-lobster ravioli ($24), displayed like a checker board, was delicious. Each bite of homemade pasta filled with creamy chunks of lobster.  The dish is available in an appetizer portion which is great for those who might find it somewhat rich. My date ordered the pappardelle with duck Bolognese ($18), which was fabulous yet slightly heavy.

Every dish here is fabulous and made with care. From the wait staff to the maitre’d, each employee was generous and attentive. Though the meal was far from cheap at the grand total, if you are willing to splurge, Ciano should be first on your list.
