2021 Polar Bear Plunge in Coney Island is put off until next year due to COVID-19

A 117 year tradition is disupted this New Year by the pandemic in Brooklyn. The Coney Island Polar Bear Club canceled its 117 Annual New Year's Day plunge due to COVID-19. The group citing "ongoing concerns regarding mass gatherings." Instead, it is teaming up with the Alliance for Coney Island to help struggling business by offering 2021 Coney Island Polar Bear swag and urging folks to make a donation to ensure the "growth and livilihood of this iconic destination." On a brighter note, Deno's Wonder Wheel Park recently announced plans for a new roller coaster. DJ Vourderis broke the news in USA Today saying "It's an important to rebuild," adding, "We're betting on the future of New York City and Coney Island.


The new coaster, called the Phoenix, will stand 68 feet tall with a top speed of 34 mph with riders suspended upside down for part of the ride. It's set to debut in 2021.
