A taste of Vietnam at Saigon Social on LES
July 5, 2021, 9:06.01 pm ET
Saigon Social on the Lower East Side, which had its official launch delayed due to the pandemic, remains an outdoor affair, at least for now. Orders are taken from a window and delivered to tables outside. The restaurant is led by Chef Helen Nguyen who trained under Chef Daniel Boulud at Daniel. But while trained in classic French her true passion is for Vietnamese cuisine. And it shows.
At Saigon Social, traditional Vietnamese comfort foods are elevated. Simple dishes like Thit Nuong, or skewers, are deeply flavored with three choices; pork belly, lemongrass chicken and garlic butter prawns. Saigon Chicken Wings get added zip from fish sauce, lemongrass and pickled jalapenos. There are traditional Banh Mi Sandwiches and not so traditional Banh Mi Burger and Softshell Crab Banh Mi. Several soups are offered, including Crab & Tomato Soup and Beef Pho with brisket and rice noodles in a beef bone broth. One of our favorites is the Oxtail Fried Rice made with oxtail, shredded ribeye and served with a fried egg on top.

On the beverage side, three types of sangria are served along with sparkling wines and beer. Non-alcoholic beverages include a Jackfruit Coco Fresca with jackfruit, toddy palm, coconut jelly & meat, basil seeds, pandon jelly and coconut water served over ice.
Saigon Social is located at 172 Orchard St, New York, NY
